Horizon: The Secret World of Pain - 31 January 2011

Horizon aired this programme about how pain relates to the brain and the mind and explores cutting edge technology that enables scientists to help people who experience either no pain or whose bodies are flooded with pain. Makes for intriguing viewing. The programme is an hour long but I've just given you the last 20 minutes, as it relates more closely to pain perception.

The excerpt begins with a young man who had a motorcycle accident and suffered severe burns. In the show he is undergoing physiotherapy, which causes him much pain. However, by distracting his mind from the procedure, he experiences less pain!

In my world of mind performance coaching, we follow a procedure called 'pattern interupt', which breaks unhelpful thought patterns & behaviours, whilst the client relates a specific experience. This can be used to remove an emotional charge of negative intrusive thoughts and behaviours. The procedure that you will see in the Horizon programme reminded me of this. What's your thoughts?
